If your EICR report has come back as “unsatisfactory,” don’t panic. It doesn’t mean your property is unsafe to live in—but it does mean that certain faults must be addressed before the property can be deemed compliant.
This guide will explain what to do next, how to get remedial work done properly, and how CIR Electrical can help you complete the process quickly and affordably.
Want to understand your report first? Read our guide on what C1, C2, and FI mean on your EICR.
What Does “Unsatisfactory” Mean?
Your EICR will be classed as unsatisfactory if the electrician finds:
- C1 – Danger present
- C2 – Potentially dangerous
- FI – Further investigation required
These issues must be resolved before the property is considered electrically safe. You’ll need a qualified electrician to carry out remedial work, and provide written confirmation once complete.
What Are the Legal Requirements?
According to the Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector (England) Regulations 2020, landlords must:
- Have remedial work carried out by a qualified person
- Complete the work within 28 days (or sooner if stated)
- Provide written confirmation to the tenant and local authority
Ignoring an unsatisfactory report could lead to fines of up to £30,000.
Common Remedial Work Examples
- Installing RCD protection
- Replacing damaged sockets or switches
- Improving earthing and bonding
- Rewiring faulty circuits
- Investigating hidden or non-compliant junctions
We will provide a clear quotation with no surprises—our goal is to get you compliant without overspending.
Can CIR Electrical Carry Out Remedial Work?
Yes. CIR Electrical can complete all necessary remedial works and issue the appropriate certification. Once the work is finished, we’ll provide:
- Minor works certificate or electrical installation certificate
- Written confirmation that the property now meets requirements
- Optional re-inspection if requested by the local authority
We are NAPIT-registered and qualified to carry out all domestic electrical repairs and upgrades.
How Long Do You Have to Complete It?
By law, all urgent safety issues must be rectified within 28 days from the date of the report. In some cases, your electrician may recommend a shorter timeframe—especially for C1 issues, which must be addressed immediately.
Will I Need a New EICR After Repairs?
Not always. Once the remedial work is complete, we’ll issue a signed certificate confirming that the installation is now safe. This satisfies your legal requirement without needing a full re-test, unless specified by the inspector.
