Can You Rewire a House in Stages or Room by Room?

Yes — rewiring your home in stages is not only possible, it’s a common approach for many of our customers across Manchester and the North West. Whether due to budget, time, or simply the desire to minimise disruption, a phased house rewire can be a practical and cost-effective solution.

At CIR Electrical Ltd, we regularly help homeowners rewire their houses room by room or in planned phases — often starting with the kitchen, then moving on to other areas when the time is right.

Why Rewire in Stages?

There are many reasons why homeowners choose to rewire their homes in stages:

  • Minimising disruption — Ideal if you’re living in the property during the works
  • Spreading the cost — Makes rewiring more manageable financially
  • Linking to renovations — Perfect during a new kitchen, bathroom or extension
  • Planning around furniture or storage — Helps you clear areas bit by bit

How Staged Rewiring Typically Works

Many of our customers choose to start with the kitchen and dining area — often during a new kitchen install. Once that area is complete and functional, they’ll move furniture upstairs or into another zone so we can progress the work.

A typical staged rewire might look like this:

  • Stage 1: Kitchen, dining room, and downstairs sockets/lights
  • Stage 2: Living room, hallway, utility or outbuildings
  • Stage 3: Bedrooms and upstairs lighting circuits

During each stage, we’ll plan ahead and install conduit or cable runs to allow for the next phase — so there’s minimal disruption to areas we’ve already completed. This avoids re-opening finished walls or lifting new flooring again later.

Can This Be Done Safely?

Absolutely — safety is our priority. Every staged rewire is done to current Part P Building Regulations and fully NAPIT certified. We test and sign off each circuit before it’s energised, and you’ll receive documentation for each completed phase.

Once the full rewire is finished, we issue a final certificate covering the entire property.

Does Rewiring in Stages Cost More?

Staged rewiring can sometimes be slightly more expensive overall due to extra visits and setup time. However, many homeowners find the flexibility and reduced disruption well worth it — especially when living in the property.

Tips for a Smooth Staged Rewire

  • Have a clear idea of which rooms will be rewired when
  • Discuss furniture movement and access with your electrician
  • Ask about provisional cable routes to future-proof the next phase
  • Plan it alongside other works like plastering, decorating or kitchen fitting
